Gin Rummy

Setup

  1. 1

Shuffle and deal 10 cards to each player.

  2. 2

Place the remaining cards face-down as the draw pile. Flip the top card face-up to start the discard pile.

  3. 3

    The non-dealer goes first.

How to Play

  1. 1

Drawing: On your turn, draw the top card from either the draw pile or the discard pile.

  2. 2

Discarding: After drawing, discard one card face-up onto the discard pile. You cannot discard a card you just drew from the discard pile.

  3. 3

Melds: Form sets (3–4 cards of the same rank) or runs (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit). These are not laid down until knocking.

  4. 4

Knocking: When your unmatched cards (deadwood) total 10 points or fewer (face cards = 10, Aces = 1), you may knock by discarding face-down and announcing your deadwood total.

  5. 5

Laying off: After you knock, your opponent reveals their hand and may lay off their unmatched cards onto your declared melds to reduce their deadwood.

  6. 6

Gin: If you knock with zero deadwood (all cards in melds), you score a bonus.

Scoring

  1. 1

Standard win: You score the difference between your deadwood total and your opponent's.

  2. 2

Gin bonus: +25 points. Your opponent cannot lay off when you go Gin.

  3. 3

Undercut: If your opponent's remaining deadwood is equal to or less than yours after you knock, they score the difference plus a 25-point bonus.

  4. 4

Game: First to 100 points wins. A game bonus of 100 points is added to the winner's total.

Strategy Tips

  1. 1

Discard high-value unmatched cards early — they cost the most if your opponent knocks.

  2. 2

Watch what your opponent picks up from the discard pile to infer their melds.

  3. 3

Don't knock with high deadwood — wait for a lower total to avoid being undercut.
