Hearts

Setup

  1. 1

Shuffle and deal all 52 cards evenly — 13 per player.

  2. 2

Before the first trick, each player passes 3 cards face-down to their left. In round 2, pass right; round 3, pass across; round 4, no passing. The cycle then repeats.

How to Play

  1. 1

Opening lead: The player holding the 2 of clubs must lead it to start the game.

  2. 2

Following suit: Players must follow the led suit if able. If unable, they may discard any card (this is your chance to dump penalty cards).

  3. 3

Hearts: Hearts and the Queen of Spades cannot be led until one has been played on a previous trick (hearts are "broken").

  4. 4

Winning tricks: The highest card of the led suit wins the trick. There is no trump suit.

  5. 5

Leading on: The winner of each trick leads the next.

Scoring

  1. 1

    Each heart: 1 penalty point.

  2. 2

Queen of Spades: 13 penalty points.

  3. 3

Shooting the moon: If one player captures ALL hearts and the Queen of Spades in a single round, they score 0 and every other player scores 26 points.

  4. 4

Game end: When any player reaches 100, the player with the lowest score wins.

Strategy Tips

  1. 1

Pass high spades (Ace, King) and high hearts when you can — they attract penalty cards.

  2. 2

Watch for a player collecting hearts early; they may be trying to shoot the moon.

  3. 3

Void a suit early so you can discard the Queen of Spades or high hearts on it.
